  8. With the recent discussion of claims that Apollo astronauts saw "UFOs" on 
  9. the moon, I thought the following posts might be of interest....

  16.      To commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon
  17.      landing on July 20, 1969, The "Oprah Winfrey" show invited five
  18.      Apollo astronauts into an open-studio forum to talk about their
  19.      moon experiences, both during the mission and afterwards.  
  20.  
  21.      What they had to say about their missions, UFOs and extra-
  22.      terrestrials in general is worth repeating, particularly in
  23.      light of the  many "stories" attributed to the Apollo
  24.      astronauts.

  26.      The astronauts taking part were:

  28.      Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin: Apollo 11 mission.  Touchdown: Sea of
  29.      Tranquility, July 20, 1969.  The second man on the moon.

  47.      Ed, did going to the moon increase your feelings
  48.      about psychic phenomena?
  49.  
  50.              MITCHELL:
  51.       Mmmm, no, not really.

  54.              OPRAH:
  55.       No, you always believed it...
  56.  
  57.              MITCHELL:
  58.       Put it into different terms.  Those are old, old
  59.       words, by the way.  Let's use the word "intuition..."

  62.       Okay.

  64.              MITCHELL
  65.       ...And how does information flow.  And yeah, I became very
  66.       interested in that at that point.

  68.              OPRAH:
  69.       Yeah.  I'm an intuitive-based person.  I do everything based
  70.       on intuition.  Do you too?

  72.              MITCHELL:
  73.       No. I'm a more linear thinker, I've had to develop
  74.       the intuition...

  76.              OPRAH:
  77.       Not me, I don't go for the linear too much...
  78.  
  79.              MITCHELL:
  80.       (laughs) ...It's to learn how to get the balance, to get both
  81.       of them; but the point of the investigations of the things
  82.       I've been interested in; we know how our five senses work, but
  83.       you're an intuitive person, most everybody's intuitive to a
  84.       greater or lesser extent.  Where does that information come
  85.       from?  Where does intuitive information come from?

  87.              OPRAH:
  88.       Uh-huh.  Where do you think it comes from?
  89.  
  90.              MITCHELL:
  91.       Well, we're starting to understand some "models" for
  92.       it.  Jung called it the "collective unconscious", there's
  93.       information out here.  It's kind of like a field and we just
  94.       kind of tune into it and there it is.  At least that is what
  95.       the modern thinking is.

  99.              OPRAH:
  100.       When you were "out there", did you sense that there
  101.       were other "beings" -- not necessarily human -- also "out
  102.       there"?  James...?
  103.  
  104.              IRWIN:
  105.       I never sensed anything out at the moon or even beyond
  106.       the moon. I don't know (why) I get that question a lot,
  107.       because they think now  we're experts on extra-terrestrial
  108.       life, but I say I don't think there's extra-terrestrial life
  109.       anywhere.  I think the Earth is the only place where there's
  110.       life.

  112.              OPRAH:
  113.       You still think that?

  116.              IRWIN:
  117.       I still believe that.

  120.              OPRAH:
  121.       You all think that?

  124.              MITCHELL:
  125.       No, I disagree completely.

  128.              OPRAH:
  129.       You don't think that, Ed?

  132.              MITCHELL:
  133.       No, I think  the universe is so magnificent and so huge, and,
  134.       uh, there is an intelligence base in the universe. And I can't
  135.       conceive of this being the only planet in the universe with
  136.       intelligent life...

  139.              OPRAH:
  140.       Intelligent life...
  141.

  143.              MITCHELL:
  144.       ...I think that there's intelligent life throughout the
  145.       universe, we just haven't discovered it yet.

  148.              OPRAH:
  149.       My intuition tells me that too, Ed.  Buzz, what do you say?

  152.              ALDRIN:
  153.       Ed may feel a little bit more certain about that.  I'm not
  154.       sure what's going to happen. It certainly looks as though the
  155.       odds are that there are a lot more opportunites out there than
  156.       we thought before, and I'd be very surprised -- and it may
  157.       even happen in our life time -- that we may find out some
  158.       evidence of intelligence and it will come because of a
  159.       furthering of the space program.

  162.              OPRAH:
  163.       All right.  Alan...

  166.              BEAN:
  167.       Well I think there's probably life out there. But someone
  168.       said, or computed, that the number of bodies in the universe
  169.       are about as dense as two chipmunks in all of North America.
  170.       And so for us to go and find --  let's say we're one of the
  171.       chipmunks and we're trying to find one of the others in all of
  172.       North America -- it's going to be hard to do.

  175.              ALDRIN:
  176.       Tough job...

  179.              BEAN:
  180.       So, I believe they're out there too, but we're not going to
  181.       find them any time soon, and we may never find them, because
  182.       of just the fact that they're so far, far apart.  If we look
  183.       at all the stars out there, there's probably planets around
  184.       them, but which one do we go to?  And if we go to that one,
  185.       even the nearest one takes four and a half years, come back in
  186.       nine...

  189.              ALDRIN:
  190.       At the speed of light...

  193.              BEAN:
  194.       That's right. Then go to the next one, takes another fifty
  195.       years, out and back...

  199.       Yeah, I'm not THAT interested...

  203.       So it's going to be a tough job...

  219.       That's how I feel about it. Charles?

  223.       I didn't sense any life out in space, personally.

  227.       Never saw anybody..?

  231.       Never saw anybody, no UFOs, nothing like that. But I agree
  232.       with Jim.  I think that we are -- human life -- is unique in
  233.       the universe, and I think that's here on Earth. I believe in
  234.       spiritual life.  The scripture does talk about Heaven and Hell
  235.       and spiritual life, life after death, but it doesn't refer to
  236.       anything out in space.  So I agree with Jim.

  240.       nervous young man asked the following question:- ]

  244.       Um yes. Do you feel that the Government hides anything from
  245.       us?  For example, you see all these stories about people that
  246.       say they've been abducted and raped -- women that've been
  247.       raped -- and they say that it's a real factual story and that
  248.       tons of people have seen it...

  251.              OPRAH:
  252.       By ETs?  What paper was this is in?
  253.

  255.              MAN:
  256.       Did you see that show (where) they said the lights were coming
  257.       down and the police were out watching...?  Do you think that
  258.       the Government hides any of that?

  261.              DUKE:
  262.       No, I don't.  Not in NASA.  We were completely open.  We
  263.       couldn't even have a private conversation without it being
  264.       blasted out to the world.  I remember John (Young) and I were
  265.       talking and we had a problem with, uh, our microphone stuck
  266.       open and he was cussing and it went out to everybody.  No
  267.       bleeps!

  271.       Ed, what do you say, you're shaking your head?

  274.              MITCHELL:
  275.       Well, I agree with what Charlie is saying about the NASA
  276.       program  -- there was nothing at all hidden in that -- but I
  277.       do believe that there's a lot more known about, uh,
  278.       extra-terrestrial investigation than is available to the
  279.       public right now; has been for a long time.

  283.       And why do you think it's kept from the public?
  284.

  286.              MITCHELL:
  287.       Oh well, that's a long, long story. It goes back to World 
  288.       War II when all of that happened, and highly classified stuff.

  292.       It makes for great book-selling...

  296.       Yeah...
